Mint (mentha) is an herb which is well known for its antispasmodic, painkilling, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, and antioxidant effects. We love peppermint oil for this formula because of it’s measured effectiveness with exercise performance.The results of a landmark study supports the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil on exercise performance, gas analysis, spirometry parameters, blood pressure, and respiratory rate. Participants reported that their workouts were less difficult (at the same objective levels of intensity) and that they were performing better when Peppermint oil was introduced.
Plant Description
Peppermint oil comes from the leaves of the peppermint plant, and is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint plants. This cooling and relaxing herb is distinguished by its square stem, dark green leaves, and small bunches of light lavender flowers. Peppermint is known to grow best near streams or in wet locations with a large amount of rainfall. Because of its water needs, Peppermint is cultivated in Europe, Asia, and North America.

Main Chemical Components: Menthol, Menthone, 1,8-Cineole
The main chemical component in Peppermint oil is menthol. Menthol has a monoterpene backbone with an alcohol functional group. Menthol contains energizing properties that contribute to the overall invigorating effect of Peppermint oil. Menthol is known to soothe the smooth muscle that lines the colon.* This relaxant property occurs due to menthol’s ability to keep calcium channels working optimally. The relaxing of colon smooth muscle reduces the movement of bowels, which eases occasional bowel looseness. Because of this effect, menthol is a main contributor to Peppermint oil’s ability to promote digestive health.* When Peppermint oil is swallowed, typically it is followed by a cooling sensation. This response happens because menthol activates the TRPM8 receptor, an indicator of cold.

Peppermint essential oil is distilled from the leaves and flowering tops of the plant. This Peppermint essential oil is sourced in the Northwestern United States and other parts of the world. This Peppermint comes from plants harvested at their peak, when the flowering is just beginning. This yields an essential oil with maximum menthol content.
Helichrysum Essential Oil Benefits
Helichrysum italicum is a small perennial herb with narrow, silver leaves and flowers that form a cluster of golden yellow, ball-shaped blossoms. The name “Helichrysum” is derived from the Greek “helios” meaning sun and “chrysos” meaning gold, referring to the color of the flowers. Helichrysum has been used in herbal health practices since ancient Greece and the oil is highly valued and sought after for its many health benefits. Helichrysum relieves muscle spasms, inflammation, and pain.

Main Chemical Components: Neryl acetate, alpha pinene, y-curcumene
Due to its chemical makeup, Helichrysum oil is characterized as a renewing essential oil. It shares chemical qualities with other renewing oils like Arborvitae, Frankincense, Eucalyptus, and Wintergreen. Helichrysum oil is comprised of a chemical group called esters, which are generally known to be calming, relaxing, and to have balancing effects on mood. Esters can also help reduce the appearance of blemishes when applied topically. Neryl acetate, the ester that is the primary chemical constituent of Helichrysum essential oil, is used in perfumery to impart floral and fruity aromas.

Plant Description
The marjoram plant, Origanum majorana, is an herbaceous perennial that is a member of the Lamiaceae family. This plant can grow to be one to two feet in height and can spread an equal distance. This plant is busy with fragrant, ovate leaves that are gray-green in color. Tiny, tubular flowers that are white or pale pink bloom in clusters on this plant.1 doTERRA Marjoram essential oil is extracted from the leaves of the plant.

Main Chemical Components: Terpinen-4-ol, sabinene hydrate, γ-terpinen
The main chemical component of Marjoram essential oil is Terpinen-4-ol. Terpinen-4-ol has a monoterpene backbone and is part of the alcohols functional group. Terpinene-4-ol contains toning properties that contribute to the overall toning properties of Marjoram essential oil.
Sourcing
In warm climates, marjoram is perennial and will continue to grow year after year, whereas in colder climates it won’t survive the winter and must be harvested, dried, and replanted annually. This oil is sourced from Egypt.
